Hairy Bikers sing Wales' praises as they visit 'bounteous' land of delicious produce

The first of six episodes of the Hairy Bikers' new show Hairy Bikers Go Local airs tonight, Tuesday, December 3 and the Geordie pair are full of praise for Wales' amazing local produce. Not only did Si King and Dave Myers sample one of our region's best restaurants, Home at Penarth by James Sommerin, but they also discover three Welsh suppliers that are changing the game when it comes to local produce.

The show follows Si King and Dave Myers as they take their electric motorbikes and embark on one very important mission around the country. This challenge, as the synopsis reads, is: "To play matchmaker and bring together the best local restaurants with the most innovative local suppliers. Each week, Dave and Si base themselves in one stunning region, meet a top local chef and learn about their menu. They’ll then find some incredible new local producers and showcase their ingredients. Can they convince their chef it's what their menu is missing?"

During the episode the beloved pair, who have won the hearts of the nation after first appearing on our screens in 2006, visit Michelin-star restaurant Home, run by James Sommerin and his daughter, Georgia, and the following Welsh suppliers: The Baker's Pig in Upper Brynamman, the Peterston Tea Estate in the Vale of Glamorgan and Wye Valley Meadery. After seeing these suppliers, the duo - Si and Dave - then prepare a dish using the ingredients they have found.

Alongside praising Home's actual home in Penarth, they praised Wales for its vast and innovative produce.

Opening the show, the pair marveled at South Wales' beauty and said: "We're starting our new match-making adventure in beautiful south Wales. Hoping to discover some hidden gems amongst these stunning coasts and hills."

Heading to Penarth, they added: "When you [get to Penarth], you discover a unique seaside resort with its glorious pavilion and pier and a distinct charm all of its very own." After exploring Penarth and meeting James and his daughter at their restaurant, they make their way to their first producer, The Baker's Pig, from whom they get charcuterie meat and Welsh nduja.

Whilst preparing their first dish using these meats from The Baker's Pig, Dave Myers is seen gushing about Wales in all its glory, admiring its 'bountiful' nature when it comes to local food.

He said: "Wales, it is a bounteous larder, isn't it? I think people are really beginning to appreciate it now."

Si replied in jest: "Well, I think the Welsh have appreciated it for a very long time and just haven't said nowt."

Dave added: "It's true though, isn't it?"

The show opened up not only the eyes of the Hairy Bikers to the wonders of Wales' commodities, but James' too.

He said: "After speaking to the Bikers when they left, to go off and find us some produce that we might not know about, I was a little bit dubious because we do know the area pretty well. But actually, this has been a real eye-opener, I am absolutely blown away. I am genuinely gobsmacked. The ingredients, the flavours, the whole lot has just been a revelation."

The Hairy Bikers airs on BBC2 and BBC iPlayer at 8pm on weekdays.
