Hairy Bikers star Dave Myers has opened up about his 'crappy' year while also delivering positive news to fans after his battle with cancer. The chef revealed back in May that he was undergoing chemotherapy after being diagnosed the disease but didn't specify where the cancer was found.
Dave, who found fame as one half of cooking duo the Hairy Bikers alongside friend Simon 'Si' King, revealed the news of his cancer diagnosis on an episode of the pair's Agony Uncles podcast and said that he didn't want to 'hide under a rock', but said he would be away from work and asked fans to 'respect his privacy' as he underwent treatment.
But in a brand new interview, Dave has shared how he'll be hopefully returning to filming. Speaking on Tommy Banks' Seasoned podcast, he explained that he is still having chemotherapy for cancer after being diagnosed last year but that there are multiple projects going on for the Hairy Bikers.
"We've got a new book out next month, and it's healthy eating. It's not a diet book because Si and I are both… we've kinda lost the weight we need. But I've had a pretty crappy year really with chemotherapy and stuff, so it's eating well for life, really. And I think it's about eating for immunity, your heart, for fibre. And as you get older, well, young as well, it's important to eat well, but still have that knack of making food tasty so you don't feel as though it's a penance. So that's going out."
He then added: "And then, all being well, I'm going to go back to filming in May." Dave also offered insight into his 'brutal' chemotherapy treatment. The 60-year-old shared how the side effects meant he could barely eat more than a can of soup.
He said: ''It's funny, when you first start chemotherapy… it's quite hard. I'm still having it. It really was brutal. I lost so much weight and then it's a battle to get your calories in. At first I thought, 'Right, this is great, I can eat all those pies I haven't been eating for years', except [my] appetite was dreadful!
"For me, a glutton, losing my appetite was awful. A can of soup was about as far as I could go. Now I've got to the point where I'm at the weight I want to be, and I want to maintain it."
He also previously said that his chemotherapy even affected his ability to walk. He told Loose Women star Kaye Adams on her How To Be 60 podcast: 'I'm still having chemotherapy, but what I'm finding out now is you have to live with the cancer. It's like a diabetic who needs insulin and constant care. That's the state I'm in now.
"By God, the chemotherapy doesn’t half age you quickly. Because your balance goes, so for someone with a motorbike that’s a disaster and my walking has been affected quite a lot, really. But I'm going to go back to film this May, and we're going to film around the chemo. That's just the way it is really."
