Hairy Biker star visits Sunderland on Monday for healthy cooking demonstration

TV favourite Si King will be helping to whip up interest in healthy cooking when he makes a return visit to Sunderland on Monday.

The North East-born chef, one half of The Hairy Bikers, who recently promoted the city's Souled Out Festival - saying he was "absolutely chuffed to bits to be involved" in the June street food and music event - is now set to make an appearance at a Family Fun and Food Day in Sunderland ’s Minster Park.

There he will be demonstrating his skills during three cookery sessions on July 25 - at noon, 1pm and 2pm - as he creates a recipe from his latest cookbook, called The Hairy Dieters’ Simple Healthy Food: 80 Tasty Recipes to Lose Weight and Stay Healthy.

And organisers say that those who attend will have an opportunity to win a copy of The Hairy Bikers' cookbook. The aim of the day is to highlight how healthy food can be tasty and simple, in the hope of encouraging families to recreate recipes at home.

Si said: “Just because something is healthy doesn’t mean that it isn’t delicious. I hope that the demonstrations will showcase that and will also inspire everyone to go home and try out the recipe for themselves.”

There will be local cooks on the programme too, also hosting demonstrations on the day. Nedhi Chera of catering company The Funky Indian Walit will be showing how to make some healthy Indian dishes at 11am and fitness guru Joe Sexton, who runs personal trainer site Fat Loss Feast, will be creating some meals at 3pm that also can be easily made at home.

Ingredients are being provided by online supermarket Ocado. The Family Fun and Food Day is organised by Sunderland BID, with support from the council, and Sharon Appleby, the business improvement district company's chief executive, said: “When everyone has busy lives it is too easy just to buy convenience food but hopefully all of these demonstrations will inspire everyone to enjoy cooking at home.

“The aim is to show that it can be quick and easy to create delicious, healthy food from scratch.” The event, which will also feature entertainment including face painters, helps launch Sunderland BID's Summer in the City programme which will run until September 4 and also includes a pop-up park and a roller rink in Keel Square; a Jurassic Jungle trail and artworks.
