Hairdresser says most people miss out key step between shampooing and conditioning

A hairdresser has said that many of us could be missing out a crucial step while washing our hair that could make a huge difference.

Ricky Walters, who owns SALON64 in London and is a hairdresser to the stars including Laura Whitmore and Nicola Roberts, has said that the most common mistake people make is reaching for the conditioner as soon as they've finished rinsing shampoo out of their hair. If you're guilty of washing your hair like this, you are likely wasting a lot of your conditioner by watering it down, the expert warned.

Ricky explained to The Mirror : "There's nothing worse than splashing out on top quality conditioner to then apply to soaking wet hair straight after washing. The high end, thicker, luxury conditioners on the market should be applied to towel dried hair.

"Long hair can hold a huge amount of water which then dilutes your lovely conditioner, leaving you with nothing but a watery residue," he added. The hairdressing expert recommends shampooing hair twice for best results, and then towel drying it for two minutes before applying conditioner and leaving this on for a further two minutes.

When putting on conditioner, you should be sure to avoid the roots as this can make your hair "lank, heavy and greasy" according to Ricky. "Only use conditioner through the lengths and ends of your hair for best results and long lasting glam," he advised.

If you're looking for a conditioner to treat stubborn and dry hair, Ricky recommends opting for one that is thick and creamy to add maximum moisture to the ends of your locks such as SALON64's own Viva La Moisture range, but you can opt for any haircare brand of your choice.
