Hairdresser claims you should 'prep' for your appointment two weeks before going in

You should be prepping for your hair appointment at least a couple of weeks before going, according to an expert hairdresser.

Most women could save themselves and their stylist time by prepping several things ahead of a scheduled trip to the hairdressers.

It all starts two weeks before the appointment - but only if you are someone who uses purple shampoo or toner.

"Two weeks before your appointment quit toning your hair at home," Tom Smith, who is a hairdresser and international creative colour director for Evo Hair, told Glamour.

"Purple shampoo or colour-boosting home-toners are fantastic to keep your colour looking salon fresh, but allow them to wash away a bit before you see your stylist so they can get a clear view of where your hair is without them."

He also recommends using an Olaplex No 3. treatment seven days before going, as it will help 'boost' the quality of your hair before your appointment.

This is helpful for you as the healthier your hair is, the more options you'll have when it comes to colouring - and you also won't have to have as much cut off if you don't want to.

Tom adds that it's also a good idea to give your hair a 'detox' using a cleansing shampoo or mineral remover before visiting the salon.

According to the hairdresser, Colour Wow's Dream Filter is a good one to use.

He also busted a further myth about turning up to an appointment with dirty hair - revealing stylists actually prefer working on clean hair.

Tom concluded: "Most hairstylists prefer to work on relatively clean hair – the exception being if you're having a scalp bleaching service, where a little build-up of natural oils will actually help to protect your scalp from irritation.

"You wouldn't go to the dentist without brushing your teeth, would you?"

Tom advises this is done a day before your appointment.
