Washing your hair should be a fairly simple process that most of us know how to do without really thinking about it. You work shampoo through your tresses until it lathers up, and then rinse it out, right?
According to one hairdresser, however, that's not the correct way to wash your hair, and you shouldn't actually be putting shampoo on every inch of your locks.
In a video shared on TikTok, a hairdresser named Taylor said that the best way to clean your hair is to actually focus all of your shampoo on your roots, as she claimed you should be cleaning your scalp rather than your hair.
Taylor insisted that if you only put shampoo on your roots, you'll be able to focus the cleaning power of the product to a specific area, and then as you rinse it out, it will trickle down the length of your hair to clean the ends.
In the clip, which was posted on her @madeandtaylored account, she said: "I always get roasted when I do a 'How To Wash Your Hair Properly' video, but I don't care because there are always people who don't know how to properly wash their hair, and this is going to save your life times a million."
The hairdresser said the ideal temperature for your water should be lukewarm to warm and said that scorching water temperatures will dry out your hair so should be avoided at all costs - especially in the winter.
She then added: "Before the shampoo even touches your hair, you want to make sure that your hair is completely drenched. Shampoo is water-soluble, which means it needs water to activate the suds, so make sure you're splitting your hair apart when you're in the shower so that water gets all the way into your scalp."
Taylor, who is from the US, then explained that she hadn't washed her hair in around a week so knew her locks would need three washes before it was completely clean.
She then said: "You're just going to focus on the root area of your hair and not worry about shampooing your ends, because when you rinse the shampoo out, it's going to run down your hair and onto your ends and clean them that way.
"I'm going to repeat the process until I get full-blown suds. [For me] third time's the charm. I know we call it shampooing our hair, but really your focus should be on shampooing your scalp. Clean scalp means healthy hair."
After rinsing her hair out, the woman then used conditioner on the middle and ends of her hair, before taking the excess product on her hands and applying it to her root area.
Taylor said she usually leaves her conditioner to sit for "a couple of minutes" before rinsing it out, and once the whole process was finished, she said: "You'll have the cleanest hair in all the land!"
Commenters on the post praised the hairdresser for her tips, with many saying they had no idea about the correct method for hair washing until they watched the video.
One person said: "Turns out I didn't know how to wash my hair."
While another wrote: "After 37 years I finally know how to properly wash my hair. Thanks to you!"
