Hair-raising moment Jet2 pilot aborts landing due to Storm Malik winds

A pilot had to abort landing at Manchester Airport due to high winds caused by Storm Malik.

The hair-rising footage was captured by an aviation enthusiast who uploaded the video to YouTube, reports the Manchester Evening News.

On Saturday, Storm Malik reportedly brought winds of up to 70mph and caused damage to to buildings and brought trees in some areas of the UK.

The video shows the holiday jet - a Jet2 Boeing 737 - on its final approach to the airport on Saturday.

The two minute-long clip - on AviationUpclose - captures the plane being buffeted in the air in the crosswind gales.

It's pushed from side to side with its landing gear fully engaged above the airport's runway ahead of an anticipated landing.

The pilot, skilfully, manages to touch down two wheels, but quickly takes off again.

The aircraft - believed to be a flight from Malaga in Spain - was reportedly forced to divert to East Midlands Airport - after a second failed attempt to land at Manchester following the 'go around', a common manoeuvre.

It's a standard landing procedure to take the plane around for another go at approaching the runway.

Pilots are often forced to use the procedure if they experience a late, sudden gust of wind, which conditions such as Saturday's appeared to bring.

AviationUpclose said on Twitter: "Windshear go around followed by a heavy bounced touch and go for this Jet2 737 at Manchester Airport during Storm Malik.

"The aircraft diverted to East Midlands."

Liverpool will be hit by the second storm in the space of 24 hours as Storm Corrie sweeps across the region.

The Met Office has issued a "danger to life" weather warning for Merseyside on Sunday and Monday with strong winds set to hit the region in a matter of hours.

Gusts could reach up to 50mph in Merseyside as Storm Corrie moves in to replace Storm Malik.

The yellow warning for wind is in place from 3pm today until 12pm tomorrow with forecasters predicting travel disruption and power cuts may occur in some areas.

The weather warning said: "Power cuts may occur, with the potential to affect other services, such as mobile phone coverage.

"Injuries and danger to life could occur from large waves and beach material being thrown onto sea fronts, coastal roads and properties

"Some damage to buildings and trees, such as tiles blown from roofs, could happen. Injuries and danger to life from flying debris are possible."
