Last year it was all about layers and layers of stacked gold necklaces. But in 2019 the humble (or not-so-humble) hair clip is taking over Instagram.
You might have noticed that barrettes are everywhere in the shops at the moment - from pearl-embellished ones to more subtle slides - but on Instagram the trend has gone maximalist. Influencers, bloggers and even the occasional celebrity have started pinning multiple hair clips into their tresses.
The hair clip trend found its roots on the runway at shows including Chanel (who did classic logo clips) and Versace. At British designer Ashley Williams’ SS19 fashion show models walked the runway with hair stacked up with diamond slogan clips. Some combined to spell out phrases including ‘social cosmic woman’ and ‘happy sad’.
On Instagram, our favourite take on the trend comes from London bloggers Olivia and Alice, who combined five different hair clips each.
Meanwhile jewellery designer Valentina Amaddeo went all out with oversized acrylic barrettes.
The pink shell clip she threw into the mix - designed by Valet Studio - has become a bit of an Instagram cult favourite.
Other bloggers have been stacking barrettes in more unusual ways. Leandra Cohen, founder of Man Repeller, shared a snap of vlogger Fanny Ekstrand's look, featuring pearl, crystal and green clips (including a fan favourite ‘REPELLER’ clip) clipped over a loose ponytail.
A photo of Vanessa Hong of The Haute Pursuit has also garnered 21,000 likes, featuring a trio of gold sculptural barretes from Lelet NY.
Blogger Rozalia Russian sported a look created by hairdresser Hermiz Daniel. Top marks for the pink and brown colour palette, complementing her pastel pink jumpsuit and balayage brown hair.
