Hailey Bieber has channelled “Weird Barbie” with an amusing throwback photo posted to Instagram.
The Rhode Beauty founder, 26, took to the social media platform on 23 October to share the old snap. In her Instagram Story, Bieber described herself as “Weird Barbie” in an apparent reference to Kate McKinnon’s character from the Barbie movie.
The model even bore a close resemblance to the quirky character too, with her hair in uneven pigtails as she smiled for what appeared to be a school yearbook photo. In the throwback photo, Bieber also sported a striped blue and white dress with an off-white cardigan and collar.
In the Barbie movie, the biggest box office hit of the summer, the Saturday Night Live alum starred as Weird Barbie - the toy Mattel doll that everyone had as a child, whose hair was cut off and whose face was drawn on with marker. During the film, Weird Barbie offers advice to Stereotypical Barbie - played by Margot Robbie - and the other Barbies of Barbie Land.
When it came to styling McKinnon’s character, both her hair and outfit needed to perfectly represent a Barbie doll that was played with a bit too roughly. She sported a pink, doodled-on dress, with spiky bleach blonde hair and multi-coloured highlights, a circle around her eye, and colourful squiggly lines on her forehead.
McKinnon previously opened up about styling her now iconic Barbie character during an appearance on Entertainment Weekly’s “Around the Table” panel in July. The comedian, 39, acknowledged that “every square millimeter was so finely considered” when it came to dressing Weird Barbie.
“There was so much philosophy and thought behind it,” the Ghostbusters star said, while the movie’s hair and makeup artist Ivana Primorac added: “We talked a lot about what this sort of Barbie who had been played with and burned and drawn on would look like.”
“I just pulled a bunch of pictures off the internet. I think I typed in, like, ‘effed up doll,’” McKinnon jokingly said.

To celebrate the blockbuster film’s release, Mattel launched its own Weird Barbie doll based on McKinnon’s character as part of its “Barbie Signature” collection. The doll came with the same outfit as McKinnon’s character, as well as the same choppy haircut.
“Our doll version wears an outfit inspired by one you’ll see in the feature film, a bright pink dress with colourful artwork and puffy sleeves, and green snakeskin boots,” read Mattel’s description for the Weird Barbie doll. “She also features short tousled hair and markings on her face to emulate a doll that’s been played with just a little too much.”
Bieber’s throwback post comes after she celebrated her five-year wedding anniversary to her husband, singer Justin Bieber. She marked the occasion by posting a series of photos of the couple to Instagram. “Five,” she simply captioned the post, along with a sparke emoji and white heart emoji. “I love you.”
Meanwhile, the “Baby” singer shared his own sweet tribute on the platform, writing that his wife has “captivated my heart” and “this journey with you will only exceed our wildest expectations”.
