Hailey Bieber’s rhode skincare review: does it live up to the hype?

Hailey Bieber declared this here the era of glazed doughnut skin - and with that, the clean girl aesthetic beauty agenda was set.

Forget mattifying finishes and drying formulations, dewy complexions are at the forefront of the skincare industry and the raison d’être for her eponymous skincare label rhode (the model’s middle name).

It may only have launched in June 2022, but it didn’t take long for Bieber to conquer the US market achieving eight-figure sales numbers in just 11 days of selling (according to CEO Melanie Bender viaVogue Business)- and now she’s on a mission for worldwide domination.

rhode (yes with an intentional lowercase ‘r’) is finally available on UK soil, much to the delight of British beauty buffs desperate to get their hands on the five-strong product line-up.

The market is awash with celebrity skincare labels, from Brad Pitt’s Le Domaine and John Legend’s Loved01 recently added to the fold among Jessica Alba’s Honest Beauty, Alicia Keys’ Keys Soulcare, Scarlett Johansson’s The Outset, Miranda Kerr’s Kora Organics, Kim Kardashian’s SKKN by Kim and Idris & Sabrina Elba‘s S’Able Labs - so how does rhode stand out from the crowd? Well, the supermodel herself is front and centre of each campaign demonstrating the products with her radiant, clear complexion - a walking advertisment that’s enough to entice any person with stressed-out skin to follow in her glowing footsteps.

Instagram haters are quick to jump on the many professional treatment she no doubt recieves ontop of her skincare routine so we were keen to find out whether in fact these products could create the lit-from-within glow that has become Bieber’s signature.

Before we deep dive into the collection, we want to take a moment to highlight the affordable price point. The exterior of each has a luxe look and while we can’t attest to the quality of the ingredients chosen, the textures do feel on the higher end and yet every product is under £30.

Through her brand, Bieber is taking a more sustainable approach by simplifying our skincare routines and through the use of post-consumer recycled materials for the packaging. There are just three products available with the lip balm in three flavours. Hydration is a major focus on the line and they are formed with peptides as the star ingredient, so these are products that are gender neutral and universally appealing. The latter is emphasised through the entirely vegan, cruelty-free and gluten-free formulas with a focus on clean components.

Peptide Glazing Fluid

This is gel-serum texture formula is pegged as “Hailey’s signature step to dewy, glazed skin” and can be used by all skin types. It is formulated with niacinamide to brighten and improve the skin’s texture, peptides for minimising the appearance of fine lines, hyaluronic acid for hydration and plumping and marula oil, a fatty acid-rich ingredient that softens the skin. The product should be applied after cleansing but before moisturiser for an illuminating “glazed” effect.

The sleek grey packaging looks good on for shelfies but the lid is fairly sizable compared to the pump within. The exterior bears the explanation “dewy hydration layer” and that’s exactly what you get with this product. It’s extremely lightweight and spreads easily across the face where the recommended two pumps is sufficient for full facial coverage. It is instantly sucked up by thirsty skin with a cooling effect and leaving a glowy finish with no stickiness. The lack of added fragrance doesn’t scream luxury but makes it suitable for more sensitive skin types.

The formula sits well under makeup, no doubt due to how quickly absorbed it is, while the transformation of my dull lacklustre complexion is immediate. But for ultra hydration, it is crucial to layer up with a thicker cream or the Barrier Restore Cream - which leads us nicely onto...

Barrier Restore Cream

The Barrier Restore Cream is described as a “rich” moisturiser, which is not at all the word I would use to describe it. The opposite is in fact true: it’s incredibly lightweight.

I have very dry skin and this product did provide a hydrating layer but would not be sufficient in winter. For the warmer weather, however, it works wonders as the featherweight texture would see you through elevated temperatures and it is understandable why LA-based Bieber created a product of this nature. This also ensures that it wont cause breakouts for the blemish-prone like myself.

The formula has the label’s signature peptides at its heart, chosen for its plumping effect on fine lines. This ingredient is combined with nourishing shea butter to strengthen the skin’s barrier, squalane for hydration and calming, niacinamide for balancing and the antioxidant acai - a unique component that shields the skin from free radicals.

The packaging explains that half a finger length is all you need to cover the entire face. It’s true; a little goes a long way. Like rhode’s serum, it’s easily blended, quickly absorbed and has the same plain scent. It’s cooling - but strangely not calming - where a bout of irritation remained as red and inflammed post application as it was pre.

Where this product excels is in the dewy, light reflecting radiance that is your complexion once you have layered it up. It’s glowy not greasy - a very important distinction that’s worth noting. That said, I will be following it up with an additional, more nourishing product for my skin type.

Peptide Lip Treatment

I am a lip balm obsessive. I have written many articles on the subject and have different formulas in every bag, on my desk at home and the office, by the bathroom sink and in every jacket pocket. I’ve tried hundreds, if not thousands, over the years, yet there are few that I would consider holy grail. This is now one of them.

The lip treatment forms a protective veil on the pout with the ingredient line-up offering nourishment on nourishment. The cocktail includes shea butter, peptides (of course), cupuaçu that improves elasticity and babassu to replenish skin’s moisture. While it’s not plumping as it is described, it is certainly moisturising and long-lasting too. It reminds me of one of my favourite-ever balms, the Summer Fridays Lip Butter Balm.

The scents are lovely. Watermelon is a sweet treat, while Salted Caramel is like eating an ice cream in the same flavour. The Unfragrance is probably my least favourite as I enjoy the sugary taste of the others. Bieber brought out a limited-edition Vanilla Cake aroma for her birthday so hopefully more will be arriving soon. I’ll take the lot.
