Hafta letters: Parliament data, listening to old Haftas, BJP’s performance in polls

Sonali Singh

Listening to the Hafta after a while. And Abhinandan’s impromptu song made my day. Much better fare than the Christmas playlists on Apple Music I had on just before. Liked the other discussions too, even if they didn’t need sheet music :-D.

Hi Team NL, just a small quip.

Manisha ma’am, in the subscription appeal of your last Newsance, you said sarkari ads milte nahi hain. It should have been sarkari ads lethe nahin hai. It could be a genuine error but please reinforce on this because it’s one of the reasons I subscribed to you guys.

And I second the opinion of one of our subscribers – that the 2024 elections were fought on graft charges against the Congress and not Hindutva, and how it suddenly changed into this frenzy we are witnessing.

I loved the Kung Fu Fighting from our CEO. Thank you guys. Stay grounded.

Hi team,

IMO direct cash is good for people but instead of reducing rations etc, the government should reduce subsidies instead because that money goes directly to businesses.

Re: Bhim Rao, the BJP/RSS has always been trying to push against BR and the Constitution, so pushback from the opposition is always good. With BR and Nehru, what happened in the past should be known but the present matters more. BJP/RSS is against BR and Constitution now.

IMO NL team needs someone who knows and cares enough about caste discrimination to talk about it in detail when it comes up, like Sudipto at TNM.

One nation one election will benefit BJP to reduce their spending, Modi can campaign for himself and local election at the same time, saving money and time. Maybe they are planning bigger things to spend more money on.

I really liked your Let’s Talk About: Punjab and I have a suggestion. Can you please make it a video in a documentary format, where you can use motion graphics where you don’t have copyright for footage. I liked Abhinandan’s narration a lot.

Hi, thanks for responding to my letter last week and I apologise for not being clear in my writing. To remind you of the context, the topic was “Why in India, Muslims are poorer than Hindus”. One of the main explanations is the flight of Muslim talent to Pakistan.

And why didn’t the same thing happen to Pakistan? The answer is yes, it did happen! Hindus in Pakistan are much poorer for the same reason; the flight of Hindu talent to India.

Regarding the relative poverty of Pakistan compared to India; the income per capita and GDP growth rates were very similar for both India and Pakistan until the 1990s. After that, India broke away from the collectivist ideology of socialism, but Pakistan did not move away from Islamo-fascism. Both ideologies suppress human freedom and prosperity, some more very recent contrasting examples are Bangladesh (Islamist rise) and Argentina (Milei’s miracle).

2018 Hafta 220: Madhu reprimanded Manisha for Newsance repeating the theme of TV anchors asking the PM where he gets his energy from.

Abhinandan to Anand: Why were you not a signatory to the letter demanding the release of Julian Assange signed by N Ram, Arundhati Roy, etc?

Some things never change. Would recommend other subscribers to listen to older Haftas, it’s hilariously tragic how the level of public discourse and news has fallen. Also would recommend the Harvinder Kaur interview – why not put clips of such interviews outside the paywall? Might help with visibility on YT.

Hi NL team,

I completely agree with the discussion on non-working Parliament. Most of us don’t even know how the Parliament should work. I have been reading old Parliament transcripts; the level of debate was another level. Even the right-leaning politicians presented their arguments with some kind of logic, even if we don’t agree on it.

Can we have some programme before Parliament sessions that presents the agenda planned for the next session? So people realise how much of the agenda never goes anywhere.

Also, another suggestion that is unrelated. Homoeopathy is a grift that’s being supported by the AYUSH ministry with our tax money. I believe it disproportionately affects the poor and lower-middle class due to rising medical costs. These so-called grifter “doctors” take Rs 50-100 and just give us sugar pills and advice against vaccines. (Source here.) My request is for an investigative report/video on this topic, if feasible.

Hi NL team,

Please arrange a discussion or publish a report of all the state elections that happened after 2014 and how many states the BJP lost where the BJP was already in power. I think we would get a very confirmative pattern that the BJP DOES NOT lose elections where the administration is already in their control. So my only suggestion is your team should spend more time and resources to investigate how the BJP has fully captured our election mechanism and nowadays electoral process in India is just a sophisticated version of North Korea/Russia.

Robin

Dear NL team.

This is in regards to the paywall stories. I have a couple of suggestions that might be worth trying.

A non-subscriber can be nudged to a small payment to just read one article or view one report/interview (maybe after successful payment, the user receives a specific URL that only works with their ID?).

I disagree with getting voting between subscribers to make an article free.

We take feedback from our subscribers very seriously. That is because they power are work, not ad revenue from governments and corporates. If you subscribe, we'll take your feedback seriously too. Click here and be part of the tribe that pays to keep news free.
