Hadrian's Wall named UK's top spot for romantic camping

The stunning scenery around Hadrian's Wall has helped earn it a top spot in the UK for camping couples.

According to new research, this area of Northumberland is the best place to spend some romantic time in a tent - as well as being highly rated for year-long camping. It topped the rankings in research carried out by outdoor specialists GO Outdoors which looked into camp sites which are open year-round.

In its list of the top 10 spots for romantic camping, Hadrian's Wall emerged as the ultimate spot for camping couples, with a total score of 8.6 which took into account criteria such as hot tubs and internet access and whether sites were peaceful, adults-only and pet-friendly.

The Roman wall location was rated especially highly for the latter, with 85% of sites welcoming pets, and also for peace, with 79% ranked as peaceful. And 24% of campsites in the area were found to feature hot tubs - "far more than any other area in this list," said the company.

Following up in the top five locations were Somerset, Cambridgeshire, Isle of Skye and Gloucestershire. " Hadrian’s Wall is the ultimate spot for couples camping," said GO Outdoor, which also singled out its a variety of adult-only campsites, including one nearer the far end of the wall: The Larches Caravan Park , a fully-serviced site set in a beautiful landscape.

The company also drew up a list featuring its top pick of camping sites which are accessible year-round, again taking into account factors such as internet and pet access as well as price, and here Hadrian's Wall was ranked second, just missing out on the second top spot to the Isle of Skye.

While it beat Skye in terms of having more sites with glamping options and children's playgrounds, there is less internet and the average price of campsites is said to be £31.33, compared with £22. But an equally high number - 58%, compared with Skye's 59% - of campsites are open year-round.

Third in this list of 10 was the Cairngorms followed by Scottish Highlands, Fort William, Gloucestershire, Scottish Borders, Hertfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Dumfries & Galloway. The company added: "The most glamorous location on the list, Hadrian’s Wall , boasts a serious amount of glamping options at 70% of its campsites.

"Many of them can be enjoyed year-round - 58% of all campsites in Hadrian’s Wall are open all 12 months of the year." For the full list of its camping hotspots see here.
