Hackney fire: Woman found dead after blaze tears through flat on Homerton High Street

A woman has been found dead in a Hackney flat after a fire, London Fire Brigade has said.

Around 30 firefighters attended the blaze in Homerton High Street at around 8.20am on Saturday and had brought the situation at the five-floor building under control by 9.40am.

“A woman was found in the flat, and sadly pronounced dead at the scene,” the London Fire Brigade said in a statement.

“Part of a ground floor flat was damaged by the fire.”

Firefighters from Homerton, Leyton, Stoke Newington and surrounding fire stations attended the scene.

The woman has not been named by the emergency service and it is under investigation by both the brigade and the Metropolitan Police.

The fire came one day after another blaze in Hackney, when around 40 firefighters tackled a flat fire on Well Street from 4pm on Friday.

Half of a two-roomed flat on the first floor above a shop was damaged by the fire and one man left the building before the brigade arrived and was treated on scene by London Ambulance Service crews.

The service said the Well Street fire had been started by the unsafe disposal of a cigarette.

"We'd rather you didn't smoke at all, but if you are a smoker, it's absolutely vital you ensure your cigarette is completely out when you've finished smoking it,” the service said.

"If you don't, you risk causing a fire which could not only destroy properties but also cost you your life."
