Gypsies invite Jimmy Carr to Auschwitz after 'disgusting' Holocaust joke

Gypsy leaders have invited controversial comedian Jimmy Carr to join them at Auschwitz as they remember the Holocaust later this year.

Carr, 49, caused a storm with a “joke” on Netflix about gypsies being murdered by the Nazis.

His Jewish comedian pal David Baddiel, 57, branded it racist. Carr has been invited to visit the death camp for a memorial.

Gypsies mark the Holocaust on August 2, the date Nazis killed more than 4,000 Roma at the camp on a single day in 1944.

Billy Welch, spokesman for the UK’s Roma, said if Carr accepted the invite he may “appreciate the hurt and fear he has stirred up”.

Calling on him to apologise, he added: “His so-called joke was so offensive because there are many still living who witnessed the brutality of what happened, and many more who lost families in barbarous murders.”

My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding star Paddy Doherty wants police to probe the “disgusting” joke. He said it was an insult to the memory of
1.5 million gypsies estimated to have been murdered by Nazis.

Downing Street described Carr’s joke as “deeply disturbing”.

But the PM’s official spokesman said it is up to Netflix if Carr’s His Dark Materials show is axed.

Health Secretary Sajid Javid branded the joke “horrid”.

Daniela Abraham, 41, from London, said her Roma great-grandmother was raped by Nazis and eight relatives died.

She said: “When I heard Carr’s joke it broke my heart.”

Netflix declined to comment.
