Londoner's Diary
The darlings of fashion braved the rain last night to celebrate the annual British Fashion Awards at the Royal Albert Hall. Model Lila Moss paid tribute to one of mum Kate’s famous nineties looks in a sheer silver slip dress with black underwear. After some fiddling with the seating plan, Kate ended up on a table with Amal Clooney, the human rights barrister.
This being the fashion pack, there were plenty of outfit changes throughout the night. Maya Jama took the biscuit for changing outfit not once, not twice, but five times. Jama was spotted cuddling backstage with boyfriend Stormzy. And in what might be a red carpet first, Rita Ora wore Primark. She showed up with husband Taika Waititi, the actor-director. Suki Waterhouse debuted her bump after announcing her pregnancy with Robert Pattinson.
Makeup mogul Charlotte Tilbury took the award for outstanding contribution to the fashion industry, while Jodie Comer and Stormzy presented Edward Enninful with the Trailblazer award, and Gwyneth Paltrow presented the lifetime achievement award to Valentino. He wasn’t there, but his partner Mr Giammetti accepted the award. Earlier in the night Giammetti accompanied Anne Hathaway on the carpet. He said of her dress, “Valentino designed it thinking about spaghetti”. “And I’ve always dreamed of being pasta,” Anne chimed in.
Alexa Chung wore a custom sequinned dress which sounded like a tambourine when she moved. “It feels futuristic and ye olde at the same time,” she said. Actors Lily James, Andrew Garfield and Gillian Anderson were there too, as well as Laura Whitmore, Jourdan Dunn and Vick Hope.
Standard Bearers of Success
Over in Marylebone, the Evening Standard served up the best pre-drinks in town at its Christmas party, held at The BoTree Bar. Our journalists toasted a year of successes, including a digital relaunch and the spectacular Theatre Awards. Editor-in-chief Dylan Jones said: “This was a wonderful celebration in London’s coolest new venue.”
