Gwyneth, Kourtney and... Kate Moss — the march of the celebrity wellness gurus

Kate Moss: a name synonymous for two decades with beauty, fashion and, of course, hedonism.

No more. The Nineties supermodel and perennial poster girl of cigarette chaining, partying and insouciant glamour has ditched the night caps in favour of herbal teas. The 48-year-old has embraced her inner spirulina drinker, telling The Guardian that over the years she has foregone her love of greasy food in favour of a morning green juice. Moss revealed that she’d “noticed an improvement since I’ve been more ‘on it’ with food – like eating salads and all that stuff – I never used to really eat salads."

It seems that ruffage and green juices were just the start. The model who quit drinking four years ago — thanks in part to her friend and recovering drug addict DJ Fat Tony — began spending more time in the countryside at her Cotswolds cottage, before moving there permanently and selling her Primrose hill home — the scene of many-a-late-night over the years.

Speaking candidly in a rare interview for BBC four’s Desert Island Discs last month, Moss admitted that late nights are no longer on her agenda, instead revealing to host Lauren Laverne that she is ‘obsessed’ with gardening, meditation and going to bed early. “I’ve got a membership to the garden centre and I go with my mum and we have the best time,” she said, adding that although, “I love a dance, I’m not into being out of control.”

It’s not altogether surprising then — now she’s firmly on the wellness wagon — that the model agency owner and businesswomen would find a way to capitalise on her own health awakening. Moss is in the process of launching her own wellness line Cosmoss, selling detoxifying teas, CBD face oil, skincare products and a “sacred mist” fragrance to balance your energy and chakras.

All these products will be available on Moss’s new website, which will launch September 1. But a glowing complexion and zen-like aura come at a price, her dawn and dusky tea bags retail at £21, while the Golden Nectar CBD face oil will set you back £98 - though a spokesperson says this prices have not been confirmed.

According to the Mail on Sunday, the soon-to-be-launched website states that the Cosmoss products are inspired by Kate’s wellness routine that she has developed over the years. “Kate’s ideal rituals balance body and soul with the natural environment and the circadian cycles… The ritual of dawn focuses on preparing our body for the new day and filling it with positive energy.” Hence the tea.

But Moss is neither alone nor the first to dip her starry toes into the lucrative wellness pool. We’ve rounded up some other celebs who have rebranded themselves as wellness gurus, vagina candle purveyors and truth-tellers.

Gwyneth Paltrow (Netflix)

No list would be complete without the OG wellness warrior Gwyneth Palttrow, founder of Goop and lover of vaginal accoutrements. The Oscar winning actress turned her hand to all things plant-based, adaptogenic and chemical-free way back in 2008, when she began her now multi-million dollar wellness platform Goop, then just a humble newsletter.

Her first edition dropped into inboxes in 2008 offering the recipe for Gwyneth’s turkey ragu and banana muffins as well as kernels of wisdom such as “eliminate white foods” and “nourish the inner aspect”. Despite a couple of lawsuits and years of derision for endorsing, among many things, vaginal steaming, shoving jade eggs up your nether regions and getting stung by a hoard of wasps in the name of health, it’s Gwyneth who’s had the last laugh. Soon after Goop’s inception and, perhaps not coincidentally, the wellness industry boomed and as of this year Goop was valued at £250 million, no small feat for an ecommerce site that began as a newsletter describing the texture of turkey mince.

While starting Goop, Gwyneth was told by branding experts that companies with double oo’s in their names perform better. Clearly, the oldest Kardashian sister got the same memo. Kourtney, 41, spent the last few years of her family’s reality franchise Keeping up with the Kardashians, complaining about having to film and defending herself against her sisters’ barbed comments about her lack of career. Fast forward two years and it’s not just the TV show that’s had a rebrand, Kourtney is now a married CEO of wellness and lifestyle platform Poosh. Similar to Goop, it offers sage advice such as, “How to make your salad less sad” and “How to organise your pantry like a Kardashian”. It will come as no surprise, then, that Goop and Poosh recently joined forces, collaborating on a candle called “This smells like my pooshy”. Yum.

It’s a truth universally acknowledged that the only redeeming feature of the 2002 Bond film Die Another Day was Halle Berry, in particular: her washboard abs. So, it would be rude not to cash in on them, right? Berry, who was diagnosed with diabetes at the age of 22, has been health obsessed ever since, initially launching a digital health platform Hallewood in 2001. Hallewood didn’t exactly take off and, after several iterations, Berry finally launched glossy fitness and wellness ecommerce site rē-spin in 2020 during the pandemic, sharing insights about everything from “embracing your erotic power” to Halle’s favourite booty band workout.

Ok, so not exactly an advocate for cleansing your genitalia, but the presenter, comedian and author has become something of an expert when it comes to addiction, recovery, meditation, spirituality and even politics and philosophy. Brand has come a long way since his days taking heroin and stripping naked in central London. After finally quitting booze and drugs in 2002, Brand, 47, has written several books gleaning from his own experience with addiction and the 12-step program to help others. Brand also has a successful podcast series Under the Skin and youtube channel where he interviews everyone from Wim Hoff to Noam Chomsky on the secrets to a healthy life and society.
