Gwen Stefani left in tears on The One Show after being surprised with message from idol

Gwen Stefani was left overcome with emotion after she was surprised with a video message from her musical inspiration during on an appearance on The One Show on Monday night.

The What You Waiting For hitmaker was on the BBC evening stalwart ahead of her British Summer Time concerts at London’s Hyde Park this weekend.

During their interview, show hosts Alex Jones and Jermaine Jenas left Stefani tearing up when they surprised her with a personalised video from The Selecter’s Pauline Black, an artist who the singer said heavily influenced her musical career.

In the clip, Black, 69, said: “I’m absolutely thrilled that I’ve influenced you and your music. Sending you lots of love my dear.”

The 53-year-old wiped away tears after watching her music idol’s heartfelt message.

“I’m crying right now,” she admitted. “Zoom in now because these are real tears. I can’t believe that. That’s incredible.

“She was my idol when I was like 13 and she just talked to me!”

Stefani is set to appear as a special guest at Pink’s headline BST Hyde Park shows on Saturday and Sunday, alongside Tinashe, Lyra, Nell Mescal and among others.

The music star’s interview comes after she hailed her husband Blake Shelton as “part of the American Dream” as he was honoured with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame last month.

The US singer said Shelton was a “rare human being” in that he had always retained his sense of self as “a country guy with a love for country music”, despite his success.

Stefani described her husband as a “country music jukebox” and “the most generous person you’ll ever know”.

“It blows my mind to be here today, standing on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, celebrating my husband,” she said. “You are so deserving of this honour… and all of your family, your friends, your colleagues could not be more proud.

She continued: “There is no one more authentic than this guy. He lives and he breathes country music. He is a country music jukebox, and it is his DNA. He was born to do this and hasn’t done anything because he wanted to be a star.

“He has just always been a star.”

Addressing Shelton directly, Stefani added: “Blake, you are a rare human being and for all the success that you’ve had in your life as a singer, a songwriter, a musician, a performer, an entertainer, an actor… he’s the same guy today as he was back then, a country guy with a love for country music.

“He’s magnetic, the most generous person you’ll ever know. And always just him, no matter where he goes.

“The reason, Blake Shelton, you are here today on the Hollywood Walk of Fame is because you are part of the country dream, the Hollywood dream, and you are part of the American dream.

“And everybody knows you’re my dream come true.”
