Gutted Edinburgh couple's new car smashed up just a week after they bought it

An Edinburgh woman has been left in shock after her car was smashed in broad daylight.

Murrin McColl, 22, only had her black Nissan for a week before she found the back window smashed and brake light damaged in Leith.

Speaking to Edinburgh Live, she explained that her partner, Lewis Baillie, parked it up near his work at the industrial state between Carron Place and Salamander Street on Thursday morning, February 16. He went to drive home at 9.30am before heading to another site and when he switched on the engine, the rear window suddenly caved in.

Murrin and Lewis are urgently looking for witnesses or people in the area with dash cams for answers, adamant that this was no accident.

She said: "My partner was at work with the car parked outside (his work has no CCTV). He went to leave his work around 9.25/9.30ish to drive home before heading to another branch of his work.

"At first he didn’t notice the damage as the car was parked facing his work with the rear window facing Salamander Street, when he started the car the glass caved in.

"He spoke to the stores nearby to ask for CCTV and then came home. I immediately called the police and my insurance. We actually only bought the car last week on February 10. So haven’t even had it a week before this happened.

"My partner has had our previous car at his work many times with no issues. We are both gutted that it has happened and are worried it was done with malicious intent. The point of impact on the glass is very clear to see and it has damaged the brake light too. There is no way it would’ve been caused by a stone chip and it definitely happened when he was at work."

Murrin shared a map where it happened (Murrin McColl)

She added: "I honestly got such a shock when he came in to tell me what happened.

"We’re just hoping someone can come forward and that they saw someone at the time so we can take this to the police. The time we believe it happened there were two Honda Jazzes, a white transit van and black BMW passing."

Police Scotland has been contacted for comment.
