Gustavo Hamer 'issue' which could boost Leeds United transfer hope as interest heats up

Leeds United could benefit from a crucial factor in their transfer interest of Coventry City midfielder Gustavo Hamer. The Whites have been linked with a move for the Brazilian all summer, with the 26-year-old's future the subject of much speculation.

New manager Daniel Farke is believed to be keen on Hamer, who was a key part of the Sky Blues side which reached the Championship play-off final in May, only to lose to Luton Town on penalties. Coventry already look likely to lose key striker Viktor Gjorkeres to Sporting Lisbon in a £20m deal, and Hamer could well follow him out of the exit door at the Coventry Building Society Arena.

However, Leeds United will have plenty of competition for his signature, with Premier League sides Fulham, Brentford and Brighton all rumoured to be interested. Reports over the weekend suggested Fulham were ready to make a move for the £10m-rated midfielder.

Former Leeds midfielder Carlton Palmer feels a move could be on the cards - and has pointed out a key element which makes any deal for Hamer different from that for Gyokeres. While Coventry may want to hold on to the player, his contract situation could force their hand.

“Fulham are said to be monitoring the situation of Coventry star midfielder Hamer,” Palmer said in an interview with Football League World. “Coventry would like to keep hold of the talented player, with the departure of star striker Viktor Gyokeres imminent.

“However, the issue is Hamer is entering the final year of his contract. Should Hamer not commit to a new deal, Coventry can’t run the risk of him leaving the club for nothing next season.

“So they may well have to cash-in on him with several very interested parties, Leeds United being one of those.”
