Gunshots caught on doorbell footage as Greenock dad gunned down on his doorstep

Doorbell footage has emerged of gunshots ringing out on a Greenock street after a man was gunned down on his doorstep.

Neil Wilson, also known as Canney, was found seriously injured after a targeted attack at a house on Nairn Road at around 1.15am on Tuesday morning.

The 37-year-old was rushed to Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, Glasgow, but died a short time later. His death is being treated as murder.

Chilling Ring doorbell footage from a nearby street captured the moment the dad-of-three was gunned down.

Eight gunshots can be heard being fired in the distance in the horror audio.

A source told the Daily Record five men were seen at Wilson's home at the time of the shooting.

They added: "Five went to the house that night. Four sat in the shadow of the wall, one knocked the door and when he opened it, they shot him."

An underworld source told the Record yesterday the shooter was seen fleeing the scene on an electric scooter.

The source said: "The shooter was on an electric scooter and took off straight away.

"The scooters are obviously small and very fast, and the area is like a rabbit warren with loads of lanes and staircases connecting the streets."

Detectives investigating the murder say a number of suspects wearing dark clothing were seen at the property and dispersed towards Angus Road after the shooting.

Detective Superintendent Cameron Miller said: "Although we have yet to establish the motive for this attack, it does appear to have been a targeted incident.

“That said, this is a shocking incident and our thoughts are with Mr Canney’s family

"Extensive police enquiries are ongoing at this time and officers are gathering CCTV footage from the surrounding area.

"Our officers are also going door to door and there is a continued high visibility police presence in the area.

“From our investigation so far we know that a number of people, described only as wearing dark clothing, turned up at the house on Nairn Road before Mr Canney was injured.

“It is then believed that the group dispersed towards Angus Road.

“We’d be keen to hear from anyone who was in Nairn Road or the immediate vicinity between 12.50am and 1.15am who may have seen the suspects in the area or who may have dashcam footage from the street around that time.”

“This is an appalling crime and there is no place for this behaviour within any community. At the time of this incident there was young children present within the home address and the person responsible showed a total disregard for their safety.

“This is a hugely traumatic incident for the family and friends of Neil. I believe the answer lies within the local community and I would urge anyone with any information to come forward or supply this information to the police anonymously.”

An incident caravan has been set up on Nairn Road so officers can be approached directly by members of the public who may hold information.

It is understood there was a drugs raid on the street in recent weeks but it remains unclear if it is connected to the alleged shooting.

Wilson survived an attempt on his life at the same Nairn Road property in 2006 and was rushed to hospital with gun shot wounds. He recovered and was later released from hospital.

Wilson is Facebook friends with Leonard Cole jr, who is currently behind bars after being convicted of attempted murder in January 2022 following a vicious machete attack which left a young man fighting for his life in 2019.

Cole’s family were themselves targeted in a firebomb murder plot in 2020.

The six men involved in the murder plot involving Cole’s family were jailed for a total of 64 years in November 2022.

Police Scotland have been contacted for comment.
