Guns found in house, 'quirky' teen died and bully dad burned ex

Good morning, these are the latest ECHO headlines today.

Gun, grenades and bullets found as police cordon off road for hours

A gun, two grenades and bullets were found in the cupboard of a communal kitchen as police cordoned off a road.

A huge number of police vehicles including matrix vans, undercover police cars and forensics vehicles were seen on Haslingden Close in Old Swan on Wednesday, April 6. Police confirmed they attended the area just before 2.50pm when they found a shotgun, ammunition and two grenades in a bag.

The Army’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team attended and carried out the safe detonation of the grenades on land off Aintree Lane.

A 27-year-old man from Old Swan was arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm without a certificate, possession of an explosive with intent to endanger life or injure property, and possession of ammunition without a certificate. He has been taken into custody to be questioned.

Detective Inspector Steve McGrath said: “This is a significant recovery and it goes without saying that in the wrong hands, they could have been used to cause serious injury or worse in our communities.

“I want to reassure those communities that every day of the year, Merseyside Police is carrying out warrants, stop searches, arrests and land searches to find weapons in circulation and remove them from our streets."

'Kind and quirky' teen died in five minute window while alone in hospital room

A teenager described as the "life and soul of the party" was able to kill herself in a five minute gap between checks while on suicide watch in hospital - prompting a prevention of future deaths warning.

"Kind and quirky" Sarah-Louise Doyle, 19, was found hanging from a bathroom door by a support worker at Clock View Hospital, Walton, on February 26 this year - prompting concerns about the checks being too predictable and the need for collapsible doors in the ensuite area of rooms.

Sarah-Louise, from Bootle, was described as "always helping everybody out", but had struggled with her mental health. She had been diagnosed with emotionally unstable personality disorder (EUPD) and anorexia and had been sectioned under the Mental Health Act in November last year.

Despite her troubles, Sarah-Louise had been in her third year of a health and social care course at Hugh Baird College and dreamed of working with disabled children, according to her mum Claire Buchanan.

Claire told the ECHO: "It's hard to put into words but she didn't let her mental health struggles show through. She seemed always happy, she would always help everybody out.

"She was the joker of the family. She loved TikTok, she loved singing and dancing. It's hard to explain it. She was quirky; that is probably the best word."

Bully who burned ex with cigarette says 'it's a joke' as he's sent down

A bullying dad asked his partner if she “wanted to feel pain” before stubbing a lit cigarette out on her.

Fethi Chebbi also dragged the woman by the hair so violently that her extensions were torn from her head in a vile campaign of abuse. A judge at Liverpool Crown Court ruled he was a risk to women as he sent him to prison yesterday.

Yet despite his actions he shouted that the decision to jail him was “a joke” as he was led to the cells. Zahra Baqri, prosecuting, said Chebbi, who is originally from Tunisia but had been living in Eastham, had been in a relationship with the woman for two and a half years.

She said that while everything appeared normal at first, Chebbi became aggressive, insecure and bullying shortly after he moved in with her. She also noticed that his behaviour worsened significantly when he was drunk and on evening in July 2020 he attacked her after drinking.

Ms Baqri said: “His mood changed for the worse and she recalls being held down, during which time he burned a cigarette into the skin on her left wrist. While he did this he asked her if she wanted to feel pain. He then stubbed the cigarette out on her.”
