
A gunman, identified as Diogenes Archangel-Ortiz, held medical staff hostage at UPMC Memorial Hospital in York, Pennsylvania, before killing a police officer and injuring five others. Authorities revealed that the gunman had visited the hospital in the days leading up to the incident, with indications that the attack was targeted at the ICU.
During the incident, the gunman held staff members hostage, leading to a confrontation with law enforcement. In a shootout with police, the gunman was killed, but not before fatally shooting Officer Andrew Duarte of the West York Borough Police Department. Two other officers were injured but are in stable condition.
Several hospital employees, including a doctor, nurse, and custodian, sustained gunshot wounds, while another employee was injured in a fall. Fortunately, all are reported to be medically stable and recovering. No patients were harmed during the ordeal.

Officer Duarte, who tragically lost his life in the line of duty, was praised for his dedication to service and commitment to keeping his community safe. Governor Josh Shapiro expressed gratitude for Duarte's service and ordered flags to fly at half-staff in his honor.
The Fraternal Order of Police also paid tribute to Officer Duarte, highlighting his bravery and selflessness in upholding the law. Duarte, who had previously served with the Denver Police Department, was remembered as a beloved colleague and friend by those who knew him.
