Three people were killed in a shooting at a state park in Iowa on Friday morning and the suspected gunman is also dead, police said.

Police were called to reports of the shooting at the the Maquoketa Caves State Park Campground before 7 am.

Mike Krapfl, a special agent in charge of the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, said the park remains closed but there is no longer a threat to the public.

He said officers responding to reports of shooting found three people dead at the scene, but he did not specify how they died and has not released their identities.

He said officers searching the campground later found the body of a Nebraska man who had died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Authorities identified him as 23-year-old Anthony Sherwin.

The campground was evacuated in the wake of the shooting.

A children’s summer camp on site called Camp Shalom said in a Facebook post that parents had been notified and it had established a pick-up site for campers.

Shalom officials said they have accounted for all campers.

President Joe Biden has spoken out in support of gun control and is expected to announce his plan to reduce gun crime saying his administration would spend $37 billion to “support law enforcement and crime prevention”.

The Iowa shooting happened only hours after a New York police officer was shot dead and another wounded on Thursday night and with America still reeling from the school shooting in Uvalde, Texas.

Questions are being asked about who is to blame for the botched law enforcement response to the elementary school shooting nearly two months ago that killed two teachers and 19 students.

More than 400 officers from various law enforcement agencies were at the school but took more than an hour to confront and kill the shooter.
