Guide to Newcastle Grainger Market where you can get everything from a luxury food to 'cheap tabs'

The historic Grainger Market in Newcastle is the definition of the word bustling and it always comes into its own at Christmas when shoppers pack its decorated alleys and aisles to buy everything from festive fruit and nuts to silver sprayed flower displays.

The range of independent businesses lining those walkways sell just about everything you can think of and, while the market's many changes over the years have seen the loss of long-established favourites, such as Robinson's book store and Katherines florists , and the influx of food outlets selling international cuisine there are still fishmongers', clothes shops and traditional butcher stalls, even though they tend not to have whole rabbits hanging on display anymore.

Generations of shoppers have frequented the city centre market where there are gems galore, from Matthew's Cheese shop to Pumphrey's coffee and the old Weigh Hall. And you can still spend a penny at the historic toilets and a few more at the original Marks & Spencer Penny Bazaar.
