Guide to moving to St Helens: House prices, schools and pubs

Moving to a new area can be quite daunting.

The ECHO has compiled a handy list of details for St Helens, including the most and least expensive houses, schools and pubs around the borough.

While the average house price in St Helens sits and around £168,022 according to Rightmove, the most expensive area, Eccleston, dwarves this figure. To the west of the town centre, Eccleston is often seen as one of the more affluent areas in the borough.

Throughout 2021, houses in Eccleston sold for an average of £235,000. This is far higher than the north west average of £173,617. Followed by Rainford at £205,000 and Rainhill at£182,750.

In contrast, the cheapest area to buy a house was Parr, with a rather low average of £92,500 in the same period, according to the Office for National Statistics. Next was the Town Centre ward (£98,000) and West Park (£113,000).

In terms of schools in the borough, there are 61 primary schools and 21 secondary schools. 45 of the schools are rated "good" by Ofsted.

According to school guide Admissions Day, the most popular primary school in St Helens is St Peter's COfE Primary School in Newton-le-Willows, which is rated as "outstanding" by Ofsted. The most popular secondary school is Cowley International School, rated as "good" by Ofsted, you can view the full list here.

The top rated pub in St Helens on TripAdvisor is The Cricketer's Arms on Peter Street. Rated as "excellent" based on 65 reviews on the site. The popular bar serves an array of both local and global ales.

Closely followed by The Glass Horse, which is also rated as "excellent" on the site, based on 32 reviews. The pub is owned by chain Hungry House.
