Guardiola Says Manchester City Might Have Peaked Under Him

Manchester City coach Pep Guardiola has expressed his delight after becoming only the second manager in the club’s history to oversee 500 or more matches. He, however, also warned that his team might have already peaked and asked fans to manage expectations.

Manchester City secured a hard-fought 2-0 victory away at Leicester City in the Premier League on Sunday, 29th December, allowing Guardiola to properly celebrate his 500th game in charge of the club. Only Les McDowall, who managed the club between 1950 and 1963, oversaw City in more games (592).

Guardiola has enjoyed unprecedented success since taking charge of the Mancunians in 2016. Under his tutelage, Manchester City have won six Premier League titles, becoming the first-ever club to win four of them on the bounce. They have also won one UEFA Champions League, four EFL Cups and two FA Cups, among other honours. The 2022-23 season marked the best one in City’s history, as they became only the eighth team on the continent to win the European Treble.

Pep Guardiola Suggests Manchester City Might Have Already Peaked

The 2024-25 season has been a bit of a letdown for Manchester City. Since the end of October, they have failed to play with their characteristic confidence and quality, picking up just two wins in their last 14 games in all competitions.

After the win over Leicester City, Guardiola said he was happy to be able to manage City in 500 games, but asked fans to manage expectations henceforth.

It is a lot of games, I am so pleased, and sharing it with the players and staff,” said the Spaniard (via The Herald).

How the staff and players have been since day one to now is a lot. I know the last 13 or 14 games have not been really, really good, but the experiences before, we have to be so pleased with what we have done together.

He added: “It is a lot of games and I couldn’t expect when I landed in the country.

We have done a lot of things that will be in the memory forever and maybe this period, which feels like a 100 months, will make us realise how nice it was and hopefully we can come back, maybe not be what we were but more close than now.

Under Guardiola, Man City have won 355 games, scored 1,213 goals, and secured a total of 18 trophies. He has won 12 league titles — across Man City, Bayern Munich, and Barcelona — in 15 seasons in a major European league.
