Guardian US today announces that Matt Mittenthal is appointed head of communications.

Matt has spent the past six years leading communications first for BuzzFeed News and later supporting the wider company, BuzzFeed, Inc., from 2017 until summer 2023. In those roles he worked closely with BuzzFeed’s senior editors and executives, building the organization’s brand and reputation; promoting and defending complex and impactful reporting that led the global news agenda; and ensuring their message was well understood by advertisers and partners.

Prior to BuzzFeed, Matt was press secretary to the New York Attorney General dealing with national, local and international media, and he also had stints on the campaign teams of Hillary (2016) and Obama (2012).

In his new role at Guardian US, Mittenthal will drive the Guardian’s editorial and commercial reputation and brand, working closely with senior Guardian editors and executives, in the US and globally.

Guardian US managing director Steve Sachs said:

“As the Guardian US continues to grow I am pleased we have hired someone of Matt’s experience and caliber to lead a proactive communications strategy to build our brand and reputation. Guardian US is focused on expanding its role in the media landscape, boosting the impact of our journalism and bringing us to the attention of more readers, advertisers and partners across America.

Guardian US editor Betsy Reed said:

“As we build the Guardian’s editorial presence in the US, it’s crucial that we are able to strategically promote the outstanding work of Guardian journalists, who are responsible for groundbreaking reporting across the country on climate, politics, sports, culture and more. Matt is a trusted, experienced media operator and I know he will help us get the biggest impact from our journalism.”

Matt Mittenthal said:

“The Guardian is a unicorn in US media: non-paywalled, financially sustainable, and growing. I couldn’t be more excited to promote its brand of fiercely independent journalism on the most urgent crises facing the US, as well as its highly successful ‘open to all, funded by many’ business model. As a long-time reader and admirer of Guardian journalism, I’m thrilled to be joining at this critical time.”

Mittenthal joins Guardian US with immediate effect and reports to Guardian US managing director Steve Sachs and Guardian US editor Betsy Reed, also working as part of the Guardian’s global communications function.

Guardian US has around 90 members of editorial staff across bureaus in New York, Washington DC, and Los Angeles. In 2022, Guardian US averaged 41 million unique visitors per month and has over 220,000 recurring supporters and digital subscribers in the US.
