Over 1,300 complaints were made against gardai in Dublin in 2021, new figures have revealed.
The Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission (GSOC) received a total of 2,189 grievances last year which saw a 12% rise compared to the 1,955 allegations in 2020.
Gardai in Dublin received the most complaints followed by 346 in Cork, 212 in Louth, and 122 in Galway, according to Freedom of Information files released to Newstalk.
Security analyst and former garda sergeant Sheelagh Brady said we need to "look more deeply" as to why some garda divisions saw a decrease while others saw an increase.
She also said details on the nature of the complaints could offer more understanding of how GSOC works.
She said: "Are they actually less serious complaints and therefore, it appears they are less serious repercussions on the members involved or are they very serious complaints but the punishment being given to the garda after the complaint are they below what the complainant may expect?”
Of the total number nationwide, seven were regarding sex offences and six were related to drug misuse.
Additionally, 50 were connected to criminal damage, and 17 were breaches of discipline.
Over 340 complaints were to do with Covid which was up from 295 in 2020.
