Ground operations in Gaza escalate as IDF targets Hamas infrastructure

IDF expands ground operations against Hamas, targeting underground infrastructure and weapons.

In the ongoing conflict between Gaza and Israel, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have announced the expansion of their ground operations against Hamas. This escalation comes as intense battles erupt in both the northern and southern regions of Gaza. The IDF aims to demolish and capture underground infrastructure and weapons used by the militant group.

President Joe Biden recently engaged in a discussion with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, during which they deliberated on the war objectives and its phased approach. Remarkably, the White House highlights that President Biden did not push for an immediate ceasefire.

As a result of newly issued evacuation orders, tens of thousands of civilians in Gaza are now seeking shelter in safer locations within the enclave. However, according to UN officials, there seems to be no safe haven left for the displaced population. This dire situation has contributed to muted Christmas celebrations in Gaza, as local leaders express solidarity with the Palestinian populace by scaling back festivities in Bethlehem.

The IDF further sheds light on its expanded operations in Gaza, emphasizing their longstanding focus on targeting Hamas positions. The intensified ground and aerial operations intend to destroy Hamas's underground infrastructure, weapon depots, and rescue all hostages held in Gaza.

While the expanded offensive concentrates on the southern part of the Gaza Strip, there has been continuous aerial bombardment throughout the entire region. This is despite the earlier evacuations of civilians advised to relocate to safer areas in the south. Concerns have been raised by aid agencies, including the United Nations, who assert that there are no truly secure places for civilians to seek refuge.

A senior advisor to Prime Minister Netanyahu, Mark Regev, recently stated that Israeli military authorities have instructed civilians to move to known safe areas in order to avoid intense fighting. However, aid agencies, along with the UN, deem this to be practically impossible for many civilians who are incapable of evacuation.

Earlier this week, even more evacuation orders were issued for residents in central Gaza, where clashes on the ground and aerial bombardment have intensified. Unfortunately, numerous civilians remain trapped and unable to move to safety. Moreover, there is growing concern about the deteriorating humanitarian situation in southern Gaza, with approximately 1.9 million Palestinians currently displaced.

As the conflict persists and the situation worsens, the international community closely monitors the developments in Gaza and hopes for a resolution that will not only halt the violence but also address the pressing humanitarian needs of the affected population.
