Ground-breaking Newcastle United women's team announcement paves way for exciting future

Newcastle United Women's team is being brought in-house by the Magpies as the club look to make Becky Langley's side a force in the women's game.

The Lady Magpies have been supported by the Newcastle United Foundation since 2017, with the aim of getting as many young girls into football across the region. However, the women's side is now officially under the ownership of Newcastle United Football Club for the first time in its history after a formal restructuring.

The club's shareholders said: "From the outset, we have stated and demonstrated our wholehearted commitment to the growth of Newcastle United Women.

"The recent success of the Lionesses has added tremendous momentum behind women's participation in football everywhere, and we want to create a pathway for all women and girls to be able to enjoy playing the game.

"We are delighted that Newcastle United Women is now formally a part of the Newcastle United family and we look forward to supporting the team as it goes from strength to strength."

The women's team will also now be exclusively sponsored by North East-based construction firm Straightline whose logo will appear on the front of the women's team shirt in place of Fun88. The company has history when it comes to United after supporting the club as Vice-Presidents during the Freddy Shepherd and John Hall era, and into the Mike Ashley era for a brief time.

Upon her arrival at Newcastle, Amanda Staveley vowed to support the women's team in their quest to climb the footballing pyramid. The co-owner stuck to her word earlier this year with Langley's team playing a historic league game at St. James' Park.

"Amanda empowering me as a female coach and her backing towards me as a female leader has been key. She has given me the confidence to really kick on next season," manager Langley told NUFC TV.

"This season is going to be another challenge, but a challenge we are raring for. We've gained great experience from last season, and the squad and staff team will be a powerful set-up going into next season. Recruitment is strong and the learning we have done will accelerate our progress even further."

With over 20,000 fans in attendance that day, a spotlight has been shone on the women's side, who are preparing to start their upcoming campaign this weekend. They take on Merseyrail Ladies on August 21.

NUFC Women season tickets are now available to buy, including all league and cup games, with tickets priced at £30 for adults and £15 for juniors and concessions.
