Groom whose wife died six weeks after wedding asks Aston Villa fans to honour her memory

A newlywed groom whose wife died aged just 25 only six weeks after marrying him is hoping she will be remembered at her beloved Aston Villa this weekend.

Amy Weir and husband Martin knew her life would eventually be cut short because of her cystic fibrosis, but they never imagined she would have such little time.

The couple met during the pandemic two years ago and love blossomed across Birmingham's footballing divide.

Amy was an Aston Villa season ticket holder and Martin is a Birmingham fan.

Now the grieving 35 year-old is hoping Villa supporters will remember his wife with a minute's applause in the 25th minute of Sunday's home game against Chelsea.

Martin told Birmingham Live : "We clicked straight away and didn't leave each other's side for two years.

"Losing her was a total shock to everyone and has hit me really hard; I just want to make her proud."

"We're trying to get a 25th-minute clap going for her at the Chelsea game.

"She loved Villa , and would love that. She deserves to be remembered always, in whatever way we can.

"We had great football banter. But I couldn't say much, really, because Villa are a bit better than us, unfortunately."

The couple, both from Great Barr, married in Redditch on August 3, 2022 and she died on September 15.

They knew Amy's life would be cut short due to her genetic condition. "We knew it - but no-one expected it to happen at 25," Martin said.

The Severn Trent drainage engineer said his wife, who worked as a BT customer consultant, was "so special" because "you knew exactly where you stood with her".

She had been having treatment for cystic fibrosis since she was 16-months-old but there was no indication when they were married that the end was near.

Reminiscing about their special day, Martin said: "She looked stunning. Amy was shining.

"We danced the night away - our first song was Will Young's Evergreen.

"Her sister walked her down the aisle because their dad passed away when Amy was 18.

"A lot of people were crying - she looked amazing."

Amy's family and friends have contacted a number of Villa footballers, including centre-back Tyrone Mings, asking for their help over the tribute.

They have also been using the hashtag '#ClapForAmy25' on social media.
