'Gritty' Manchester named one of UK's 'coolest' places to live as travel experts hail 'affordable' Ancoats

Manchester has been ranked as one of the 'coolest' cities in the UK to live, according to a popular travel blog.

The list of the ten coolest cities was published by Nomads Nation, a popular travel site which attracts millions of view of its YouTube channel. While Manchester features, London took the top spot and the small city of Portsmouth came in second.

The list, which is part of the blog's 'Amazing Places to Live in the UK publication rounds up the best places to live so readers can find somewhere that suits them and their budget. The round-up summarises the cost of living in each city, the cost of rent and other pros and cons.

The top ten also featured Brighton in third, Edinburgh in fourth and Oxford and fifth, while Manchester ranked in sixth ahead of Bristol, Exeter, Belfast and Cardiff. Manchester was described as the city for those "looking for gritty but cool city life".

Stevenson Square in the Northern Quarter (Adam Vaughan)

The entry describes the former industrial town as "a great place to soak up a British culture", and nods to the city's boutiques, bars, cafes and good pubs close by. The Northern Quarter and Ancoats, which is described as "affordable", are signposted as good places to live, while the suburb of Altrincham also gets a mention for its food market.

The guide adds: "Once a hive of industry, with textile factories and busy canals, Manchester is an unpretentious but funky place that people are proud to be from. When it comes to somewhere to live in Manchester, you might want to consider the Northern Quarter, close to the train station.

"Here you will find narrow alleyways full of boutiques and bars, mixed in with cafes and a load of good pubs close by. Affordable Ancoats is a trendy, up-and-coming area with a load of hip hangouts and art studios.

"Manchester is also the home of two of the world’s most famous football clubs Manchester United, who play at the famed ground Old Trafford, and Manchester City. Football fans should definitely make a beeline for a tour!

Listing the pros of Manchester, the guide says he city is relatively cheap, has an interesting history and lively nightlife. However, the cons might be a harder to hear, as the city is described as "not that pretty", and adds "some areas aren't good".

Unsuprinsgly, the weather also features on the cons side, with the Nomads Nation guide saying it "isn't amazing". And as a final top tip for those considering Manchester as somewhere they might want to live, the guide recommends Colony co-working space at Jactin House in Ancoats, which it describes as "seriously cool" for its roof terrace and pool table.
