Grimes doubtful for Tigers' AFL opener

Richmond co-captain Dylan Grimes is in doubt for the season opener with traditional rivals Carlton. (AAP)

Newly-appointed Richmond co-captain Dylan Grimes is likely to miss the AFL club's season opener after undergoing thumb surgery.

Grimes, who will share leadership duties with Toby Nankervis this year, damaged a ligament in his left thumb during the Tigers' pre-season clash with Hawthorn on Saturday.

The 30-year-old defender had surgery to repair the injury on Monday and is listed as "doubtful" for the round-one clash with Carlton at the MCG on March 17.

Grimes' absence could mean a shift back to defence for Noah Balta, who has been trialled as a forward during the pre-season.

Balta kicked three goals in an eye-catching display against the Hawks in Tasmania.

Missing round one would be disappointing for Grimes, who was named co-captain with fellow triple-premiership star Nankervis last month.

It is the first time the Tigers have had joint leaders.

The pair have taken over from Trent Cotchin, who led Richmond to three flags and became the club's longest-serving skipper in nine seasons at the helm.

Cotchin stepped down from the role at the end of last year, opting to pass the baton before he retires.
