Grimes 'denounces Nazism' in furious statement after ex Elon Musk's salute controversy

Musician Grimes has blasted her ex Elon Musk after he was accused of doing a Nazi salute at Donald Trump’s inauguration ceremony.

The SpaceX CEO, 53, appeared at Washington DC's Capital One Arena on Monday after Trump was sworn in as president for the second time.

He said onstage: "Elections come and go, some are important and some are not, but this one really mattered and I just want to say thank you for making it happen."

Musk then shocked viewers by putting his hand on his chest before raising his arm out with an open hand.

He made the gesture twice in a move that some online likened to a fascist salute used by Adolf Hitler and the Nazis.

Grimes - who shares son Æ A-Xii, four, daughter Exa Dark Sideræl, three, and son Tau Techno Mechanicus, two, with Musk - called out her ex’s actions after facing threats of being “cancelled” over his behaviour.

When asked by a fan on X to “clarify” her stance, she wrote: "I’m happy to denounce Nazism - and the far alt right. Would that help clear things up?”

The 36-year-old added: “I’ve just gotten out of breakfast and have to catch a flight, and am still debating how to approach things diplomatically because I feel in over my head.

“But if there’s concern about that, I am happy to set the record strait [sic] in a meaningful way. If I don’t respond for another 5 hrs it’s cus there’s no wifi on my flight.”

Another fan wrote on X that she was planning to unfollow Grimes and cover up a tribute tattoo because of the incident.

In a reply, Grimes wrote: “While I deeply respect your concern - it is unhealthy that people are this upset when I have not even been online yet today and am only just learning about this controversy now.

“I don’t know what happened and I will not make a rash statement.”

The Canadian musician - real name Claire Bouchier - continued: “It’s absurd that someone can be this cancelled for something their ex did before they even heard it happened.

“I am not him. I will not make a statement every time he does something. I can only send love back into a world that is hurting.”

Musk denied that he had done a Nazi-style salute after the criticism, writing on X: “Frankly, they need better dirty tricks. The 'everyone is Hitler' attack is sooo tired.”

The world’s richest man has backed the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD), an anti-immigration, anti-Islamic party labelled as right-wing-extremist by German security services, in an upcoming national election.

He hosted a broadcast with the party's leader on his social media platform earlier this month.
