A collection of prints by Khadija Saye – a young artist who died in the Grenfell Tower fire – will be on display next month in London.
The nine self-portraits will also be for sale at Victoria Miro Gallery. Most of the Ghambian-British artist’s works perished in the fire, but nine silkscreen prints have been created from scans of her original tintype photographs.
The images, entitled Dwellings: in this Space we Breathe, explore the “migration of traditional Gambian spiritual practices” and will be shown as part of Rock My Soul, an exhibition of works by Black women artists curated by Isaac Julien.
Saye’s Dwellings: in this Space we Breathe originally went on display at the Venice Biennale in 2017.
Money raised from the print sales will go to the Estate of Khadija Saye and the Khadija Saye IntoArts Programme, a charity which provides learning centres from young people from disadvantaged backgrounds.
Saye's work will be exhibited alongside artists including Wangechi Mutu, Tschabalala Self, Karon Davis and Zanele Muholi.
