A road was closed and a large cordon was set up today after a grenade was found.
Police were forced to close Mesnes Street in Wigan after a grenade was found in a piece of furniture donated to a charity shop on the road, Greater Manchester Police has confirmed. The road was closed between Northway and Standishgate around a British Heart Foundation charity shop.
The area was cleared as police conducted enquiries into the bizarre find. Police officers received the reports at around 10.40am today (Sunday, May 1) after the suspected grenade was found. Enquiries are still ongoing but it's believed there weren't "any malicious intentions", the Manchester Evening News reports.

Special officers made their way to the scene after the discovery, as well as the fire service also being required. In a statement, GMP Wigan said: "At around 10.40am today (Sunday 1 May 2022), we received a report of a suspected grenade contained within furniture donated to a charity shop on Mesnes Street, Wigan.
"Specialist officers are in attendance. A cordon has been put in place as a precaution.
"Enquiries are ongoing but, at this stage, there are not believed to be any malicious intentions."
The fire service also attended.
