Greggs to open another Cardiff branch to replace old Carphone Warehouse

Cardiff is set to get its latest branch of Greggs, taking over the former vacant Carphone Warehouse on North Road. Permission has been granted for the new Greggs - which now has over 20 branches across the city - to open in a unit at Parkfield House after a planning application was submitted to Cardiff Council.

The latest branch of the popular bakery opened in Llandaff North at the Tivoli on Station Road. The new North Road site will be opening up in a vacant unit of what used to be the site of a Carphone Warehouse.

The new site would employ two full-time and five part-time staff, according to the planning application, and would see the installation of a new shopfront and signage. Last year, student hub Cathays South and Bute Park ranked as the area in Wales with the most Greggs, having 10 branches in the area.

This means that there is a branch for every 1,301 people - with the area ranking eighth nationally as a Greggs hotspot. A quick count of the stores listed on Greggs shop finder brings up 19 branches - but this does not include those north of Western Avenue, including the most recently opened Llandaff North branch.

Further out of the city centre, and beyond Western Avenue, there are four more sites in Thornhill, Pentwyn, and Ely. Of all the Greggs in Cardiff, its Queen Street branch is the most highly rated, with an overall score of five out of five and 100% of reviewers giving it an 'excellent' rating on TripAdvisor. The latest branch in the city will join a Tesco Express and a Subway, which also occupy the Parkfield House site.

The nearest branches of Greggs in the city are both less than a mile away, with one on Crwys Road just 0.8 miles away, and another on Excelsior Industrial estate is 0.7 miles away. Most, however, are in close proximity of each other in the city centre.

With a branch on St Mary Street, another on St John Street, one on Queen Street, and another in St David's shopping centre, there are four Greggs all within approximately 0.2 miles of each other. According to Google Maps, five branches of Greggs can be found in a 10 minute walk between St Mary Street and Queen Street.
