Bakery chain Greggs has thanked a red squirrel for its ‘enthusiastic first shift’ after getting trapped in a Scottish branch for three days. The critter was first spotted bounding about the Pitlochry store on Saturday sparking a call to the Scottish SPCA for help to rescue it.
But the mischievous animal proved tricky to catch after it sought refuge high up in the rafters of the store, which was forced to close. The squirrel was successfully released into Faskally Wood on the banks of Loch Dunmore late on Tuesday evening.
The popular bakery shared a video of the moment it ran for freedom - after being given its own name badge by ‘fellow’ staff.
Greggs tweeted: “Some of you may have noticed we had a wee new starter in Pitlochry Greggs this week. Friendly locals offered their help to lure the Greggs Squirrel out.
“But ultimately, if you were having a tasty sleepover in Greggs, would you leave? No, of course not. After giving us the run around, we managed to catch the Greggs Squirrel safe and sound.
“Thanks for the, er, enthusiastic first shift. The Pitlochry shop is now closed for a deep clean and will reopen later this week, squirrel free (we hope).”
