Greggs set to follow Lidl in opening new branch in north Bristol

Greggs and Budgens are expected to open new branches in a burgeoning neighbourhood north of Bristol.

Drawings have been submitted to South Gloucestershire Council showing plans for the bakery and small supermarket, near the entrance to the huge new Brabazon housing estate.

The proposed site in Patchway is inside a new petrol station yet to open, which had already been granted planning consent.

Permission is now being sought for the signage outside, which reveals that the station will be a Shell garage with a Greggs and Budgens on site.

There will be outdoor seating outside the Greggs unit, as well as room inside for the chain's usual offer of baked goods, sandwiches and drinks.

They will be located just off the Brabazon Roundabout, on the corner of Hayes Way and the entrance to the new Northfields Park housing estate.

A car wash, parking bays and charging points for electric vehicles are also outlined on the proposed site map.

The huge Brabazon development is currently being constructed by YTL Developments just off the roundabout, at the former Filton Airfield, where the first cluster of homes went up for sale earlier this year.

It will eventually accommodate more than 2,600 homes, 62 acres of employment space, up to three new schools, a huge public park, health centre and retail and leisure facilities.

Nearby YTL is also set to build the Bristol Arena at the old Brabazon Hangars, which is expected to open in late 2023 or early 2024.

Other large developments including Charlton Hayes have contributed to the area's growing population, attracting big brands including Lidl supermarket to move in.

Greggs already runs several branches in South Gloucestershire, including one about two and a half miles away at Gloucester Road North in Filton.

Bradley Stoke, Yate, Staple Hill, Kingswood and Thornbury also all have existing branches.

The planning application for the new site has been put forward by the Motor Fuel Group, which owns more than 900 fuel stations in the UK operating under the BP, Shell, Esso, Texaco, JET and Murco brands.

There are several existing petrol stations within a five-minute drive of the site, including at the Morrisons Cribbs Causeway branch and the ASDA Patchway superstore.

The original planning application for a petrol station with convenience store and coffee shop was approved by the council last August.

Two residents had objected, raising concerns about fumes next to their homes and noting that there were already facilities nearby.

The planning application argued: "The site is positioned within an allocated enterprise area that will see materially significant growth of residents and employees over the coming years.

"The growth in local demand for vehicle fuelling will no doubt exceed the additional provisions hereby proposed and there can be no reasonable doubt that this new facility would be essential infrastructure and will contribute to the efficient and effective operation of businesses in the enterprise area."

It is not yet clear when the new petrol station or shops are due to open.
