Greggs opening inside Walkden Tesco Extra superstore

Greggs has opened a new shop in Walkden inside the Tesco superstore. The shop in the Ellesmere Shopping Centre has created 15 jobs and it means the company now has 104 outlets in Greater Manchester.

As well as the usual savoury favourites, the store hopes to get off to flying start with its new Christmas menu: the festive bake, all-new vegan turkey-free & stuffing baguette, pigs under blankets baguette and festive hot drink range.

Customers will also be able to make click and collect orders via the Greggs App and its famed breakfast combinations offering a breakfast roll or baguette alongside an orange juice or hot drink - served until 11am every day.

Gillian Long, Retail Operations Director for Greggs, said: “Our new shop in Walkden Tesco Extra, has brought 15 new jobs to the local area, as well as providing customers with a modern, convenient new place to experience their favourite Greggs food.”

The location also includes a Nuttall Unit so customers can purchase some of Greggs favourite hot items such as southern fried chicken goujons and potato wedges.

In May Greggs announced it was to open a giant store in Salford Quays with its arrival at MediaCity creating 25 jobs.

It was perhaps a sign of the times that the company set up shop at the location as the cost of living soars. Last year a prestige tenant at MediaCity, the northern supermarket chain, Booths, renowned for its range of high quality food, closed. The branch had suffered "significant" losses since opening in 2011.

Greggs opened a large 1,500 sq ft shop in the unit where Booths once was. It is unlikely to be short of customers. It is just over a decade since the first phase of the development was completed.

But even Greggs are not immune to the affects of inflation. In the spring it announced it had been forced to increase prices of popular breakfast items due to rising prices. The company said product prices were set to increase by up to 10p.

The company was founded in 1939 by John Gregg, then delivering fresh eggs and yeast, by pushbike, to the families of Newcastle. It has since grown to become a British High Street staple with 2,200 shops and 25,000 staff.

Any further jobs created at the Ellesmere shop will be posted on https://www.greggsfamily.co.uk/
