Greggs customer claims she was charged 20p to eat in 'because she doesn't speak Welsh'

A TripAdvisor reviewer claims she had to pay 20p more to eat inside a Greggs in North Wales, but the customers around her speaking Welsh were not charged extra.

The reviewer, who goes by the name 'Shena P' on TripAdvisor, has claimed the bakery outlet in Bangor, Gwynedd asked her to pay 20p more to eat her sausage roll in rather than take it away.

She then left a scathing two-star review after visiting this particular Greggs with her husband, where they both ordered a sausage roll, a vanilla slice and some tea, Wales Online reported.

When they went to pay, Shena claimed the man behind the till said they would have to pay 20p more if they’d like to eat in.

Greggs says it is "legally obliged" to add VAT to any item consumed in any of the bakery chain's indoor seating areas.

But Shena alleges none of the Welsh speakers in the store appeared to be charged to sit down.

Her review reads: "My partner and I ordered a sausage roll, vanilla slice and tea to eat/drink inside. However, to our surprise, the young man who served told us there would be a 20p charge to sit inside.

“We have visited many Greggs shops in England and Scotland but never been charged to sit down. Is this something that is only done in North Wales - if so why?

“We noticed that all other customers that sat down around us were Welsh-speaking and none were charged 20p to sit down. I have sent a private message to Greggs regarding this matter and would like an explanation."

A spokesperson for Greggs explained that all their stores across the UK charge different prices for people wanting to eat on the premises. The price is based on the VAT of each individual item.

In a statement, they added: "We're legally obliged to include VAT for all for food eaten within our seating area.

"However, this isn't a one-off charge. This is per item, not per visit."
