We've all heard the tired old story about the tourist who visits Wales and walks into a pub, only for everyone inside to immediately switch from talking English to Welsh. There have been endless variations on the theme over the years and it's both paranoid and patently ridiculous.
Why? Because we Welsh are generally a friendly bunch who are quick to welcome strangers to our beautiful country, not alienate them.
An alternative explanation, of course, is that those in the pub could have already been conversing happily in their native language before those visitors even came in. And that would certainly seem the most probable explanation in a largely Welsh-speaking area like Bangor in North Wales.

Because it's there that the latest take on that cliched customer complaint is based - occurring this time, however, in a branch of Greggs rather than a boozer. And, instead of everyone starting to 'siarad Cymraeg' as soon as a so-called outsider appeared, it's been claimed a non-Welsh speaker was charged extra for wanting to eat instore, whereas regulars were not. The Greggs capital of Wales where you can find the most branches has been revealed - find out more here.
Detailed in a two-out-of-five-star write-up on the Tripadvisor website from someone calling herself Shena P, it read: "My partner and I ordered a sausage roll, vanilla slice and tea to eat/drink inside. However, to our surprise, the young man who served told us there would be a 20p charge to sit inside.
"We have visited many Greggs shops in England and Scotland but never been charged to sit down. Is this something that is only done in North Wales - if so why? We noticed that all other customers that sat down around us were Welsh speaking and none were charged 20p to sit down. I have sent a private message to Greggs regarding this matter and would like an explanation." There's a Greggs clothing collection at Primark - find out more about it here.
Well, we saved Shena P the bother and queried it with Greggs ourselves. They replied that all their stores across the UK charge different prices for people wanting to eat on the premises. You can get more food and drink news and other story updates by subscribing to our newsletters here.
"We're legally obliged to include VAT for all for food eaten within our seating area," said a spokesperson. "However, this isn't a one-off charge. This is per item, not per visit."
We hope that clears things up for you, Shena. Please enjoy your sausage roll.
