Greggs bakery in Cardiff closed until further notice after fire saw street cordoned off

A branch of Greggs in Cardiff city centre will remain closed until further notice after a fire broke out at the bakery. Four fire engines attended the store on St John Street on Wednesday, October 26 after what is believed to be a small electrical fire started in the basement.

South Wales Fire and Rescue service said it received a call at 8.06am on Wednesday morning (Wednesday, October 26) with four water ladders used when they arrived on the scene. Get the latest news from across Cardiff sent straight to your inbox for free by signing up to our newsletter.

The fire was extinguished less than half an hour later and no one was injured. However, a digger was needed to isolate the electrics, with part of the street cordoned off for the rest of the morning while highways engineers carried out the work. Boba Time, which is next door to the bakery, was also forced to close temporarily.

The branch remained shut on Thursday, with a spokesperson for Greggs confirming that the site was closed until further notice. The store is currently undergoing a deep clean following work by specialist digging teams and investigations by the fire service.

The spokesperson added that the exact date when the bakery would reopen was still unknown, with customers encouraged to visit other branches in the meantime. There are five others to choose from in the city centre, with the nearest being just a few hundred metres away on St Mary Street.
