Greggs announces changes to Newcastle Airport hours - and it's good news for travellers

For many people, a holiday starts the moment they get to the airport, with plenty of places to pass the time before heading to the departure gate.

A lads' holiday might start with a pint, while bargain-hunters may see what they can bag themselves in duty free. But one place in Newcastle International Airport that speaks to everyone - at least in the North East - is Greggs.

And the airport branch has just announced changes to its opening hours, with holiday makers now able to bag themselves a sausage roll, a steak bake or a doughnut any time of the day. Yes, due to 'increased demand,' the North East's 'favourite baker' next to the Arrival's Hall is now open 24 hours a day.

The news was revealed on a post on Newcastle Airport's Facebook page and fans were quick to react, with one saying: "Perfect, it is always needed when we fly into Newcastle."

Another said: "Dad will be happy, saves me going to Asda for his sausage roll when he lands," while a third added: "Beautiful scenes, we can get a Greggs before our flight now!"

Despite the mostly positive reactions, not everyone was happy, with one commenter saying: "This is not something to boast about! And another was disappointed to be missing out as her usual flight was unavailable. She said: "Shame I'm having to go to Manchester because easyJet no longer fly to Turkey or Lanzarote from Newcastle."

A Greggs spokesperson said: "With increased demand as we enter peak holiday season, we’ve extended the opening hours at our Newcastle Airport shop to 24 hours, seven days a week. No matter what time your flight, you can now prepare for your journey with a taste of home, whether that be a sausage roll, a sweet treat or a stottie!"

Should you fancy taking advantage of the new Greggs' opening times, be sure to get to the Airport a little earlier, as there's no branch airside. You're able to take solid food through to the departure lounge, but as you can only a maximum of 100ml per item in liquids, coffees and soft drinks will not be permitted through.
