San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Popovich has announced his intention to return to coaching after suffering a mild stroke in early November. The NBA's all-time leader in coaching wins released a statement expressing gratitude for the overwhelming support he and his family have received during his recovery.

Popovich, who has led the Spurs to five championships and coached the United States to a gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, is currently in his 29th season as the head coach of the Spurs. The stroke occurred just hours before a home game against Minnesota, and Popovich was promptly attended to by rescue workers at the team's arena before being transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.

While there is no set timetable for his return, doctors are optimistic about his full recovery. In the meantime, assistant coach Mitch Johnson has been serving as the acting coach in Popovich's absence and has been praised for his work by fellow coaches.

Popovich, known for his self-deprecating humor, joked about his impatience during the rehabilitation process, stating that those assisting him have quickly learned that he is 'less than coachable.' Despite his playful remarks, the Spurs organization and the basketball community eagerly await his return to the sidelines.

Popovich is one of only three coaches to win the NBA Coach of the Year award three times and is among the elite group of coaches with at least five NBA titles. His contributions to the Spurs over the past 35 years have been invaluable, and his impact on the sport of basketball is widely recognized.

General manager Brian Wright expressed the organization's anticipation for Popovich's return, emphasizing the importance of his leadership and presence within the team. As Popovich continues his rehabilitation, the basketball world remains supportive and hopeful for his full recovery and eventual return to coaching.
