Greg Rutherford leaves GB bobsleigh pilot 'gobsmacked' as he eyes Winter Olympics spot

Summer Olympians switching to winter sports is becoming a more and more popular trend, and one of Britain's most recognisable athletics stars is set to become the latest to take part in the chillier version of the Games.

Following in the footsteps of the likes of Marcus Adam, Phil Harries and Allyn Condon is Greg RutherfordTeam GB's former long jump champion who hopes to put his skills to good use as part of the bobsleigh team.

The Super Saturday hero is eyeing a spot on the team for the Beijing 2022 Games, and has been training hard in the hope of joining a handful of British athletes to represent their country at both a summer and a winter Olympics.

And Rutherford has proven that his bid is no stunt, having left the Great Britain bobsleigh captain Lamin Deen "gobsmacked" by how well he has picked up the sport.

GB's participation in the sport was under threat after a poor 18th-placed finish in 2018 which saw the team's funding revoked, but enough private funding has been cobbled together for one more crack at it next year.

Deen, 40, says Rutherford has done enough for a place on his team as they head to Beijing in February.

"We sent Greg down to work with the coaches and within a week he had learned how to perform in a two-man sled," he said.

"When I saw the footage I was gobsmacked – usually it takes four or five sessions, but he grasped it in the first session and he just kept getting better.

"We took him down to Bath to see how he'd get on with the four-man, and within one session he was blasting it off and jumping on the side and I thought 'wow, I've never seen anything like it'."

Rutherford shot to stardom with his gold medal in the long jump at London 2012, on the same night Mo Farah and Jessica Ennis-Hill also won their events – all within a few minutes of each other at the Olympic Stadium.

Now he hopes to make a name for himself in another sport, after being encouraged to give bobsleigh a go by two-time Olympic champion for the USA Kaillie Humphries.

She is a mutual friend of both Rutherford and Deen, and it was her suggestion which led to the two linking up.

"She said she'd been speaking to Greg about getting involved and how he would be good for my team," Deen continued.

"We exchanged a few messages on social media and said we should have a chat, then I forgot all about it. Then my phone rang one day and it was Greg.

"We spoke for a good hour and a half. At first I was doubtful that he could make it in the time frame, not just physically but in terms of having the attributes to learn about the four-man sled and loading, and everything else that comes with it.

"A lot of people thought it was a publicity stunt, but it isn't. I told him, 'if you don't make the grade against these guys who've been doing it for years, I'm sorry, but you won't be able to do it'.

"But he did the business. He earned his right against veterans and made the squad and this is where we are today.

"He's a heavy guy and he's very powerful. The explosive power from the block is what we've been lacking and he'll definitely bring that. But he's also just so keen and full of energy that it rubs off on anyone.

"To have someone who had achieved so much, it inspires even the veterans.

"I've been among many four-man teams in my time, but you can just see that everyone is glowing. It's amazing to see their sheer motivation. Everyone wants the same thing and I'm excited."
