Greg Kiltie says 'excellent' St Mirren support are driving the team forward and targets extended run in team

Greg Kiltie is adamant the incredible backing of the St Mirren faithful is helping to drive the club on to better results.

Roared on by around 2,000 supporters at Somerset Park on Saturday afternoon, the former Killie midfielder admitted the Buddies’ Scottish Cup clash with Ayr United almost felt like a home game.

And he believes the club’s passionate supporters are helping to push the team forward, with the players determined to send the fans home happy having won their last two away games on the trot.

Kiltie told Express Sport: “The fans were absolutely excellent.

“There were around 2,000 and it almost felt like we were playing a home game.

“I know they were only at one side, but they were making all the noise.

“They were really good and we always seem to have a great away support, so it was nice to win in front of them.

“It drives you on. The last two games they’ve been excellent, even at Dundee United having not won in so long they were there in good numbers.

“Hopefully we can keep winning games for them and putting in strong performances.”

Kiltie was one of the stand-out performers for the second time in the space of five days for the Buddies in Jamie McGrath’s absence, notching his first goal for the club since joining in the summer with a sweet left-foot strike.

The 25-year-old is delighted to find himself back in a starting XI again and is determined to now keep hold of his place with competition in the middle of the park still fierce.

He said: “I’m delighted to get my first goal. I had one ruled out on Tuesday so it was nice to get the monkey off the back as such and start scoring.

“You always aim to get scoring after a move but it’s taken its time. Hopefully I can kick on from here.

“I just need to take my opportunity and try and stay in the team.

“I haven’t really played as much as I’d like in the first half of the season, but hopefully now I can kick on.

“You’re always disappointed when you’re not playing. When you’re in the team you need to prove you deserve to stay in it.

“We’ve got a very good squad and it’s not a case of when you’re in the team, you just stay there.

“There’s always people knocking on the door to play ahead of you.

“It’s a great thing we’ve got going here. We just need to keep driving forward.”
