Greenock 'shooting' victim named as 'gunman fled scene on electric scooter'

The victim of an alleged shooting in Greenock has been named locally as Neil Wilson.

The dad-of-three was found seriously injured on Nairn Road at around 1.15am on Tuesday morning. The 37-year-old was rushed to Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, Glasgow, but died a short time later.

Locals at the scene told the Daily Record members of Wilson's family were heard 'screaming in the street' after he was reportedly gunned down.

One local source also told the Record they heard seven gunshots ring out before police descended on the scene.

An underworld source told the Record the 'shooter' was seen fleeing the scene on an electric scooter.

The source said: "The shooter was on an electric scooter and took off straight away."

It is understood there was a drugs raid on the street in recent weeks but it remains unclear if it is connected to the alleged shooting.

Wilson survived an attempt on his life at the same Nairn Road property in 2006 and was rushed to hospital with gun shot wounds. He recovered and was later released from hospital.

Wilson is Facebook friends with Leonard Cole jr, who is currently behind bars after being convicted of attempted murder in January 2022 following a vicious machete attack which left a young man fighting for his life in 2019.

Cole’s family were themselves targeted in a firebomb murder plot in 2020.

A gang of six planned the petrol bombing of the home of Cole’s parents, Rosaleen Sutherland and Leonard snr, in July 2020 in retaliation for an earlier attack.

A drug user called George Miller, 46, was then hired to target the property again months later on September 14 but Miller died in the driveway of the home after he poured petrol through the letterbox and set himself on fire.

There was a final firebombing incident in the town’s Cumberland Road on September 19, 2020. Cole’s sister Ellen and two others - including a child - were at the property at the time.

The six men involved in the murder plot involving Cole’s family were jailed for a total of 64 years in November 2022.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said:"Around 1.15 am on Tuesday, February 28, police were called to a house on Nairn Road, Greenock where a man was found seriously injured.

"Officers attended and the 37-year-old man was taken by ambulance to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital where he died a short time later.

"A report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal. Officers are treating his death as suspicious and enquiries are continuing.”
