Green light for West End tenement renovation despite fears for nesting birds

Renovation work on an unlisted West End building can be carried out after planning bosses granted planning permission to work on repairs.

The four-storey blonde sandstone tenement building situated between 343 West Princes Street and Montague Street in Hillhead is part of the Woodlands Conservation area.

It will now undergo structural, stone work, tree and roof repairs despite concerns from residents that the work would harm nesting birds.

The application was brought before the planning committee this morning. Questions were raised about the hours of building work and whether that would disturb the neighbours significantly.

Baillie Patricia Ferguson said: “I did wonder whether it is a standard condition on the granting of applications if there should be a restriction in hours of work because in tenement properties and built up areas, noise carries and becomes quite oppressive sometimes.

“Are there restrictions put on the times people can work and if not can we make that a condition? Do we have a timescale on how long this work will take to complete?”

It was confirmed by a planning officer that in larger cases, advisory notes are included to ensure work is only carried out at a certain time.

There is no confirmed time scale but there is a window of time because of the protected bird species outside the window.

Councillor Eva Bollandar added: “It is nice to see this property which is in a conservation area being taken care of and it is nice that people want to do the work.”

The application was agreed unanimously by members of the committee.
