Green light for new student accommodation in Edinburgh

Host Student Housing's plan for a new 289-bed development have been granted planning permission by the City of Edinburgh Council.

Located on Westfield Road in Golgie, the proposed building will be built on the site of a currently unused office and car showroom. The plans also involve retaining and refurbishing a stone cottage situated on the site.

The development will comprise a mix of accommodation, with accessible studios and cluster apartments of five, six and eight bedrooms, with dedicated kitchen and living spaces.

Students will have access to communal amenities such as a gym, study space and residents’ lounge, as well as a concierge and reception service. 289 cycle parking spaces will also be provided.

Host stated that efforts have been made in the design process to ensure landscaping and garden space adds to the continued regeneration of the area.

The scheme has also been designed to go beyond the environmental requirements of the local council and will target BREEAM Excellent.

John Nesbitt, managing director at Host, said: “We are excited to bring the Host student accommodation experience to Edinburgh and provide a welcoming, well-managed and stress-free place to live for students studying at campuses such as Edinburgh Napier, University of Edinburgh and Heriot-Watt, all of which can be easily accessed by foot, bike and public transport from this location.”

Host, formerly Victoria Hall Management, in conjunction with Tiger Developments - part of the O’ Flynn Group, which has extensive interests in the property sector in Ireland - has more than 25 years’ experience providing student accommodation.

It has developed and acquired more than 10,000 beds and currently operates circa 9,000 student beds across 28 sites in UK, Ireland and Europe.
